Wilbur’s Epic Journey is Dione Butcher first book. Dione has always had a deep love for science and takes great pleasure in trying to convince people that science is fun and helps us understand how nature works. Dione was born in London but grew up in Guyana. She loves to share her knowledge of nature and science in a fun and accessible way. She derives great pleasure from seeing young people show understanding and appreciation of nature and natural phenomena because of how she would break down complicated concepts so that they are more relevant to them.

Dione was looking for a book about migration of animals and couldn’t find one that very young children could engage with so she decided to write Wilbur’s Epic journey. She has continues to use her ability of patiently explaining natural events in a fun way with this book.

Wilbur’s Epic Journey describes the migration route of the wildebeests around the great plains of Africa but tells it as a story from the point of view of a newly born wildebeest calf, Wilbur. He learns some important lessons about his place in the interdependency of life and why his herd is necessary to improve his chances of survival. This book explores some of the challenges and milestones that children may face as they grow up and shows how the support of family and friends can help children to grow into independent adults by finding their own inner strength to overcome their fears; solve problems they may face and even encourage and celebrate with them when they overcome challenges.
